Adding attachments to your notes

(closed account) says:
I've been waiting for a way to add attachments (images, PDFs etc.) to my RTM reference notes, but as no official support for attachments has arrived, I decided to look at alternative ways of doing this.

I've tried Evernote, but I don't like the fact that I can't integrate this into RTM. I'd rather have a single service that I can use for my tasks, lists and notes.

So my method is this:

I use Rackspace Cloud Files, but this would probably also work with services such as Dropbox, Flickr, Picasa or others that allow public URLs for files. The advantage of a service like Rackspace Cloud Files or Dropbox, is you aren't limited to images/photos - you can also use this method to link to documents, PDFs etc.

I have photos on my iPhone that I want to be linked to notes in a "reference" list in my RTM account.

I upload these using The Rackspace Cloud Files iPhone app (the current version doesn't allow uploading of files to cloud files, but I'm beta testing a new version that does, which should be released soon).

It needs to be a CDN-enabled container to allow for the URL to be accessible publicly.

Once I've uploaded the image to my Cloud Files container, I then copy the URL and add it to a new task in my "reference" list in the RTM app.

I can then just tap the URL in the RTM app to open and view the image in Safari.

I'd love to have the ability to add attachments to my tasks natively in RTM, but until such a feature is implemented, this is the best alternative I've found.

I do most of my word processing and spreadsheets in Google Docs. I can also upload power point presentations and pdf files there. I've found it pretty convenient to just add the URL of the Google Docs file to the URL field in RTM. If that doesn't work, there's drop box, zumodrive, and drop.io. Several ways to skin this cat. I've never needed to attach a picture to a task, but I guess if I did either one of the three aforementioned services would work, as would picasaweb, flikr, etc.

Another option is emailing yourself the file in gmail, and creating the task from the email with the RTM for firefox extension. This links the task to the email, and thus, the file.

Hi,

nice trick, but a bit complex for me. I sometimes use the URL for an evernote entry via the evernote web interface.

Best regards,
Edwin

What a great idea! I would use dropbox since that's what I use, but I really wish I had thought of this.

Good one!!

Yeah, dropbox is a little trickier to do, as you can't choose a filename when you upload an image using the Dropbox iPhone app, and you can't rename it after uploading it - and as it uses the format "Mobile Photo .jpg", i.e. with spaces, RTM doesn't like the full URL and takes part of it as a due date for the task.

Hopefully Dropbox will add the ability to rename files in an update to their app, which would make this a little easier.

For now, you could however enter the URL in this format:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/123456/Mobile%20Photo%205%20Jan%202010%2015%2004%2000.jpg

i.e. using "%20" where there is a space in the filename you've uploaded
and changing the "123456" to whatever number is in your public folder URL

I've tested it using this method and it works, although it's a little more convoluted than using the Rackspace Cloud Files app to upload the photo.

Easier solution.

Get twit pic uploader

save or take said picture of importance to phone.

Use twitpic to upload, copy URL, paste URL into associated task in RTM

Google Docs also allows you to upload any kind of file and share it with others. So that's another option using the URL method you just described. :)

I got something for this that may be a little easier, though I did it on my Android phone. Not sure if iPhones have the same features...

If you set up a the RTM Twitter service and send a tweet to RTM, any URL in your tweet will apparently be in the URL field of the task.

-sign up for RTM for Twitter. It look me 2 minutes:
https://www.rememberthemilk.com/services/twitter/
-take a picture
-"share" the picture with your twitter client (this is an easy step with Android. I used the Twitdroid client FWIW).
-tweet the url for the pic to "d rtm [text] [url]"

This will make a new task in your default list (most likely inbox). The name of the task is whatever you had for [test] above and the URL to the picture is automatically in the URL field of the task.

OK, I should add that the photos are technically public. The tweet itself only goes to RTM, so no one else as the link to the picture, but technically someone may be able to get to it. Maybe if they view other pics you tweet publicly. I haven't played around with it enough to figure out if there is a way to keep the pics private.
