Customize reminders for individual tasks

emilio.bertelli says:
I found one thing that should be improved: i'm quite new here, but it seems that when you set reminders in the setting section you can only set a single hour and a single day or week or whatever before for all the tasks in general, but you can't customize a single reminder for each single task.
For instance i could need (and that happens) a reminder for one task one day before, and for another task 3 days before, and for another one 72 hours before, because for one task i need just one day to prepare it, while for another i could need 3 days or more and so on.
Not every task is the same and not every task needs to be reminded the same time in advance.
So it would be an useful idea if, when i select one task, from there, opening the reminder setting i can set the reminder for that single task and not a general set for all the tasks.
Maybe i'm wrong and i haven't found out that this possibility is already displayed: if so, please tell me how to do. If not, this is a thing that must be done absolutely.

I'd love that too. Most of my tasks don't need reminders, I just want to see them when I log in. Sometimes I want a reminder to make an important phone call or send a birthday card. I currently track those on Google Calendar, which allows individualized reminders for every appointment (task). RTM, can you give us reminders customizable by individual task?

In four years, I can hardly count how many times this natural, entirely reasonable suggestion has been put forward. An incomplete list follows below. While there is a great Gcal workaround (https://www.rememberthemilk.com/forums/tips/6517/), it's too roundabout to imagine all new RTM users to set that up, and in the meantime the inadequate flexibility in the current reminder system is surely not helping to win any new users over.

Now that the multi-edit UI issues have been addressed here, I think that reminders may very well be the leading open issue in terms of site functionality here at RTM.

It would be great to see Bob turn his attention to this challenge. I think tags and smartlists lay a foundation for reminders that could be extremely powerful for the end user without being that hard to code.

I would like to add my agreement with these comments in the hopes that this feature will be added soon. For me, it is incredibly useful to be able to set separate reminders, or even multiple types of reminders (as Google Calendar will let you do) for each task. The addition of this feature would make RTM a truly useful application for me. The lack of this features has limited its usefulness. Thanks for (hopefully) working on this one!

I can't believe that this request is continually being ignored.

It also needs customisation of what sort of reminder to use. For example, every time I get a reminder, my iPhone, Gmail IM and email go off. I don't need that. In fact, it's annoying to have to acknowledge all three.

I'd much prefer to choose how to be reminded.

This is definitely a must have feature!

Not only that, I thing the RTM-reminder-funtion in general could be improved a lot (IMO it is the one major downside to RTM)!

I would love to have the following features implemented:

- different reminders for different tasks
- different email-adresses for different tasks (e.g. work-adress for work tasks and personal adress for personal tasks)

- responding to reminders!!!
i have all my reminders filtered to a specific folder in my GMail and (as i'm working mostly out of this list during the day) it would be very nice to have the possibility to respond to a reminder with "Done" and the task would get marked as Done in RTM. another nice feature would be to reschedule tasks via reply to the remindes in a similar manner.

Hi All,

I'm new to RTM and I am currently using the Android App on my Droid. I have just started the 15 day trial period right now and I was about to purchase the subscription when I noticed that I could not set up individual reminders for my tasks. This one thing alone will prevent me from purchasing the Pro upgrade. I was quite surprised that RTM doesn't allow this now. I am even MORE surprised that this feature has been requested for so long and has not been implemented!

RTM: What is the deal with implementing different reminders at the individual task level? Why has this common feature of todo list/task managers not been implemented in RTM??? I absolutely need this feature implemented in order to be able to use RTM as my task manager. Since it currently does not have this ability, and I doubt it will happen in the next 14 days when my trial is over, I will be looking for another task manager.

Pro Users: I assume you have asked RTM support about this. What have they said about this? Have they given a reason why this has not been implemented yet?

Regards,

Paul

Ditto. Ditto. Ditto. Another disappointed user. It's such an intuitive feature that it never occurred to me that RTM didn't have it for individual tasks until I was setting up my first list. In fact, the "Setting reminders" section of https://www.rememberthemilk.com/help/guide/ led me to believe this feature was already in place.

My nonprofit organization currently uses Memotome.com and are looking to move to RTM, but might have to put this hold as this is a feature we use regularly.

Ideally we'd have the ability to set reminders for individual tasks. And like Memotome.com, we'd have the ability to setup a Final Reminder and Warning Reminders. Final Reminder is adjustable by minutes, hours, days and weeks from the due date (which includes date and time of day). Warning Reminder(s) come in before the Final Reminder. And you can customize how many Warning Reminder(s) you receive and how often they occur — again minutes, hours, days and weeks apart.

Please move this up on the priority list, RTM.

I moderate tasks for a small group of people. Each person has their own specific task list. On the topic of more flexibility in reminders, it would be great if I had the ability to set each person to receive e-mail reminders FOR THEIR PERSONAL TASK LIST ONLY, instead of having to see each person's task list together.

Hope to see all these reminder issues addressed or updated soon.

As it currently stands, RTM effectively has no reminder system because the inflexible one in place has no practical usage scenario for the average monkey (man? me?). IMHO (the only important one of course) working to allow configurable reminders should be the only thing on the RTM staff's plate until it is completed. There, I said it: so let it be done!! Ah, imaginary podiums make me happy....done rant-writing now.

I sometimes have tasks that take 6 months or more to achieve and others that can be done very quickly. Thus, to standardise the reminders across all tasks is just rediculous.
Also, I'd like to be able to overview my taskes beyond just a weekly view. Because some take longer than a week to achieve, so in that contexts it's too late to see the task so close to the deadline!

I could get around it by setting the due date in advance of when the task is due, so it acts as a reminder, but psychologically it's unhelpful to have RTM screaming 'overdue' on tasks which aren't in reality and I could miss one which is actually overdue.

You could create two entries for a task with different dates: 'begin task' and 'task due' but that's clumsy.

Apart from that, RTM is a great system and supports David Allen's 'Getting Dhings Done' well. :)

Thanks

ABSOLUTELY! Not only that, but you should be able to tweak which type of reminders you want for different things (and this should carry to the Android app too).

For instance, I want to get a daily email of all tasks due today, but I don't want my phone to notify me at that time.

And for tasks with a due time, I want *those* to pop up a reminder on my phone, but I don't want to get an email.

(and reminders should not have to concur with due dates in any way. I need to be reminded well before the due date on some tasks).

+1. What would satisfy most of us I think is to have 1 default reminder date. Have this apply to all reminders and lists etc at first. Then allow a custom reminder date for each task that we can set. This is crucial.

What would be useful for others is to also have a custom due date for each tag or list as well that we can set to override the default. But first and foremost we at least need reminder days for each task.

I have been struggling very much with this, to a point where I'm starting to look for other services.

I've been finding all kinds of ways that RTM can help me organize different lists in my life...but most of them require this functionality. Is ther *any* update on the status of this feature? I agree with @macleodks - a default is fine, but the ability to customize is really key.

I'm a productivity trainer and I've been recommending RTM as an alternative to Google tasks, but I didn't realize that you can't customize reminders. That's enough to make me stop recommending RTM.

I would like to suggest Smart Filter based reminders or the ability to mark a Smart List as to generate reminders if a new item is added. Ideally, I could select to be reminded via mail or app.

Aw, geez. I just got Siri and was all excited about getting going with RTM, hit the reminder problem, looked for a solution, and - NONE! - so I'm going to be looking for a different productivity program.

Don't get why this hasn't been addressed after years of requests.

joleary says:
I don't really need to be able to customize the reminders, but would really value being able to get separate reminders for each task (vs. the daily digest). I know I can get separate reminders if I set different times associated with each task, but that is a giant pain - is there a simpler solution?

This would make RTM so much better! Right now I have reminders on, but I tend to ignore them because a lot of the reminders are for things that don't really need one. If I only got a reminder for certain things, I wouldn't get habituated to them and they'd be a lot more effective.

johnno2 says:
If I'm not mistaken, reminders seem to be an all or nothing selection. I have set up RTM for bill payments, most of which would benefit from a reminder. However, direct debits simply need to be seen in the Tasks screen without a reminder.
The ability to set individual reminders would be a great enhancement.

I can setup individual reminders in Outlook.com, but the task management tool they provide is lacking. It would be great to find a tool that does individual reminders along with task management. I'll give this tool a year as I just upgraded to Pro, but after that year if there is no individual reminders, I'm off to another evaluation.

Hello, much as I love RTM, I've been waiting and waiting for this. A due date PLUS a reminder date/time. Thanks.
Posted 10 years ago
robertadmiller says:
RTM is the best. I've been using it since I can't remember when, but it's crippling to have reminders set globally instead of per task. I use Outlook at work and rely on this feature; I would love to have it for my personal tasks. I don't want a reminder for most of my tasks, but the ones that need one are generally the most important. I currently have to leave RTM to create a separate calendar event if I want a reminder, which is annoying and redundant.

Per task reminders should:

1. Be able to be set to any arbitrary date and time.
2. Be able to toggle on or off each type of reminder, and each service for types that can use more than one service. For example, I should be able to send an SMS reminder and an email reminder to my work email, but not a desktop reminder and not an email to my personal email.

Thanks for considering this idea!
