Inconsistent help for default list / list for e-mailing

jansona says:
I e-mailed myself a task, expecting it to appear in "Inbox". However, it appeared in my default list. This is counterintuitive, because the help says it will go to Inbox, and quite frankly, I can't see what other purpose Inbox should serve other than to collect incoming tasks. I don't like how the default list serves so many different purposes. (e-mail target, add new tasks target, first list shown when logged in...)

Anyways, I researched the help, and it's inconsistent. I'm hoping this is an oversight/bug, because I'd really prefer tasks to go to Inbox when e-mailed.

The Inbox is just like your email inbox -- except that instead of emails, you'll receive tasks.

There are four kinds of tasks that will appear in your Inbox:

Tasks sent by other users.
Tasks shared by other users.
Tasks you've emailed to your Inbox.
Tasks you've added via Twitter.

---

By default, your task will appear in your Inbox. If you want the task to appear in a different list, you can do so with the following:

List: Work or L: Work

---

The default list is the first list displayed when you sign in. It's also the list that tasks added by email and Twitter will be added to (unless you specify another list).

Your default list is where emailed tasks will end up, and that can be changed from the Inbox to another list. You can check which is your default in your Settings, on the Lists tab. (See more about the default list on our site.)

Also, with Smart Add syntax, you can specify any list for the emailed task to be moved into.

That said, I've added this to our list to investigate; this could be clearer in the documentation. Thanks for reporting this.

You say, "I don't like how the default list serves so many different purposes." Does this cramp your style somehow? If so, we should be able to work that out; let me know what you'd like to do and I'll let you know how you can do it. :)

My goal is for emailed tasks to default to Inbox (which is what "inbox" means to me- stuff I need to look at) and tasks I add while I'm on the RTM webpage to default to Tasks (my list for "filed" tasks).

The thinking is, if I'm emailing something in, it needs to be reviewed to get properly tagged/etc., but if I'm already in RTM, I have the interface ready to do all the tagging as I enter it, so it can just go directly into the Tasks list.

I use the tag cloud for most of my navigation, so I can't solve this just by adding a list to all my searches.

Also, I do understand I can specify the target list for an emailed task, I was just hoping that'd be an extra step I wouldn't have to do every time :) The more things that are automated the better!

Sounds like you want the Inbox to be your default list.

As far as the website, it sounds like you might like linking to a specific list: While only published lists have permalinks in the interface, it is possible to link directly to unpublished lists and Smart Lists too (but you'd need to construct the URL yourself).

The format for URLs is: http://www.rememberthemilk.com/home/username/listid/

You can find the list ID by looking at the print, iCalendar, or Atom feed links (which all follow the /username/listid/ pattern too).

This URL will take you straight to that list (as long as you're logged in). We suggest bookmarking one of these URLs if it's something you wish to access frequently.

The link hint doesn't directly solve this but will prove useful, thanks.

The problem with inbox being default is now, if I'm looking at an auto-generated search from the tag cloud, and I quick-add a task, it defaults to "inbox" list, whereas ideally, i'd like it to default to "tasks". I'll probably stick with tasks as default because that's the use case 90% of the time, and for tasks I e-mail myself/etc. I'll just remember to add #Inbox to them.

Thanks!
