Sorting tasks by date affected by presence of tags

When using a smart list I have set the sort order to sort by date. For each day (assuming only due dates and no due times set) I am getting two groupings.
Firstly the tasks WITH tags, displayed by priority...followed by the tasks WITHOUT any tags, displayed by priority. Why should the presence of tags affect the order when sorted by date. This is not a logical sorting option for me...is it a bug? I see the same behaviour on the Chrome PC browser and iPhone app.
