Export: Am I just cynical?

I moved to RTM based on a friend recommendation, but also because of the absolute rigidity of my previous product, Things. I was delighted to see that among other things, I could just email a list to RTM and voila, it's in the system.
Now to export my list so I can start a project outline.
what??? I just *can't*?
copying the text on the page creates tabs and spaces that then create an organizational headache when pasting into any document or outline format.
How can it be that such a simple and vital notion, namely having my data that belongs to me and doing whatever I want with it, just hasn't made it onto the development list of this project?
My cynical nature says the reason all these productivity apps are so stubborn about importing and exporting is because these developers want to *own* our productivity and keep us from moving our text and ideas away from them to work elsewhere.
Perhaps someone at RTM will tell me that's not true, and explain why such a seemingly simple function, namely exporting my data to use however I want, isn't possible?
