Ordering in the list?

every day I set up the tasks that I have to do and then assign a specific order to them (like buy milk => then you can make cake). So I would like to know is there a way to introduce some sort of ordering for this.
Currently I am using a scheme whereby I add 1_, 2_, 3_ and then sort the list alphabetically. It works, but it's stupid, and it's pretty troublesome.
