I think you're saying that you selected <Multiple> and all tags were deleted? Unfortunately, when you select multiple tasks common tags aren't listed separately, so there's no simple way to do this en masse currently. Sorry for any inconvenience.
In case you're not using the tag elsewhere, you could delete it from the Settings (on the Tags tab) in which case it will be removed from your tasks.

Your workaround of deleting that tag from the Settings would actually work in this case, although I don't like to go to the settings for this.

I would love to see this feature as well. Some simple syntax like "-tag", although I have tags that begin with -, so that's not perfect.
