I was considering writing an app that interfaces with RTM in a way I'd like to (ncurses interface) I would certainly be open sourcing my app and I was wondering how my key should be handled once I get one..

If everyone who builds my app has to get a key themselves then no one is going to build it, but if I leave it exposed folks can take it and use it for their own apps (which I assume part of the tracking of API usage is to track abuse)

Just curious what the official stance is on open source applications and API Keys.
