Completed button vanishes?

I'm sure this is newbie operator error on my part, but it seems like sometimes ina Task list the buttons at the top are for Completed and Delete, and other times they say Cancel and Save. But it's not clear to me when or why this happens, what is being Cancelled or Saved (neither button seems to do anything), or how I get my Completed button back.
