Push Notifications now available

emily (Remember The Milk) says:
As described on the blog, the Push Notification service is now supported in RTM app version 1.1.0.

I've migrated the recent posts from the previous Push Notifications topic into this one.

If you experience a problem with Push Notifications, please check the (just added :) FAQ and Troubleshooting pages first (see under 'Push Notifications').

Please feel free to ask questions or post problems here, or start a new forum topic for your question (which might make things a bit easier to keep track of... :)

Thanks!

Just saw and updated the latest iPhone app.

Thanks for the inclusion of push, but I cannot find any setting to turn on badge notifications - just messages.

This means that the badge always simply displays the number of tasks it always did - whether or not they've been completed on the computer.

Do you intend this?! Given I was already getting email notifications, what in practical terms has changed? I still have a badge task count that is not necessarily accurate. I assumed that this would be blindingly obvious use of push notifications, even over alerts?

Installed the new version that supports push notification and have done some testing but I can't see how this works. I enabled notifications under the iPhone settings and then created a task through the web client that was due a few minutes later. I waited a few hours but the badge never updated. At least not until I opened the app.

I checked the app update history page on your site but there is no info there yet on this version so I can't tell exactly what features you are providing for push notifications.

Can you let us know what this version provides? I'm hoping that it includes badge updates based on the setting I've selected for the badge in the app settings (in my case tasks due today).

The push notifications work for task reminders when a task has a due time. Just tested it and it works.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I added a task that was due at 12:10 am. It's now 12:12 and I have no notification. No alert, no badge update. I verified that I have notifications on in the iPhone settings...what am I missing?

Just installed 1.1.0 on my iPod touch and push notifications are coming through! This is great, really great, thanks! I really like the way that if my iPod is "turned off" the notification is still displayed - this is really going to be very useful!

However, after watching the Keynote where the push notifications where announced I thought that one of the things that push notifications would offer was to be able to update the app icon with an appropriate badge, however if I add a new task on the web the number of incomplete tasks is not updated accordingly? Does the push notifications API not support this?

Hi, i was very happy to see the app update with push notifications on the changes list yesterday and installed it right away. It was a dissapointment though to find out, that only notifications and no sound and badges are supported in this version. Here's how my workflow goes and why I would make use of this features.
I use use the app together with a calendar (as probably most of the people). The calendar holds info about events, RTM about to-dos. While you are very unlikely to skip or postpone an event, this happens quite often with to-dos and makes a good notification system cruicial. For example, if you happen to be in a meeting at the time you have set for rtm to remind you about making a phone call you should be able to see that you've missed the notification. That's where badges come handy, as you are able to see a change in the number of todos to complete and the badgestays there until you open the app a d mark the task as done (contrary to the notification, which would be lost if you receive another one after that, for example from your IM software). Sounds, on the other hand, are handy when you are on the road or not watching the phone. Whithouth them push is like an alarm clock which displays a notification that you have to get up but does not ring... Which is not the most reliable thing on earth.
Going a bit further, I would also add an option to include a list of overdue tasks in the daly agenda notification (no matter if it is an email, push message or an IM). Why? Be ause if you forget to buy toilet paper on your way home you are not really likely to open the app to postpone the task, which doesn't mean you are not to buy some on the following day ;)

I don't seem to getting push notifications.

Exact same situation as mn10bikr, I have push settings enabled (and autosync in RTM settings), but when go to add a new task on the website, it doesn't show up on the badge until Imanually open the app to sync.

Am I doing something wrong or is it just not working properly yet ?

Well after creating a task that was due more than 10 minutes in the future I finally received an alert.

However, I am terribly disappointed to not see badge updates in this new release. Quite frankly I have very few tasks with a timed due date. Most are just due on a date and it is for those tasks that I'm wanting the badge updates (once midnight hits).

Unless there's some reason that badge updates can't be done, I'd have to say that this release misses the mark.

RTM - can you weigh in here??

I'll try to address all of the questions/issues raised so far in this topic (sorry if I miss any!).

Sound alerts not working: answered in this topic (it's a bug).

Badge updates: created this topic and posted an explanation (please head over there if you'd like to discuss this one further :)

Push Notifications not working: for anyone experiencing problems, please try the steps on the (now updated :) troubleshooting page and let me know if you continue to have problems. Everything's looking good so far on our end, so we'd love to investigate further if anyone still has trouble after trying those steps.

Thanks! :)

I liked RTM on the iPhone, but didn't like not getting reminders. (Forgot to setup SMS reminders), but now that push is here I'm sold again! I'm hoping the badge works out, but even before that-just getting alerts with push notifications is AWESOME! :)

My iPhone does not appear in the Reminders section. Could this be related to the fact that it is a jailbroken iPhone?

Emily,

Will the push notifications work even when not actively in the RTM application? I just ran one and it only appeared 1 minute after it should have when I went into the RTM application. My impression was that the push notification should appear no matter what application one is using.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Gents-

Might try the additional step of logging out of RTM in your browser, and then coming back in. Then check your "Reminders" under "Settings". You should then see your iPhone or other device listed separately from the SMS option. That's what worked for me. My iPhone didn't show up in the list until I logged out and then logged back into my account.

mneumann says:
It's not the problem my iPhone would not be listed in the web configuration. This all looks perfect. Reminders simply don't work - by any means (iPhone, email, messengers). Only the daily summary reminder arrives.

I am currently interested in setting this up, however I do not have a text messaging plan with AT&T. If I set this push reminder feature up, and I going to get dinged by AT&T for every notification as if it were a txt msg?

"Do PNs work for tasks that simply have a due day, rather than a specific time?"

This is a good question. To follow on, once the sounds bug is fixed, will the sound by configurable for tasks without a specific time?

My current daily reminder is sent at 12am (via email) but I would not like to get a sound/vibrate at this time. I could change this to a different time (for example 6am when I get up) but this is not ideal for the weekends.

It would be nice to be able to configure sounds to "off" for tasks with no time assigned.

What do you see on the reminders page? Perhaps a small glitch in how you have the reminders set up is impeding your push feature. I am just a user of RTM, but I am happy to do what I can to help.

@leah: thx for reply. I activated all possible options on the reminder page:

(1) daily reminder (same day + 1 day ahead)
(2) for tasks with a due date (time due + 10 minutes ahead)
(3) my MSN account + my Yahoo account + my iPhone (ID visible ) all on "active"
on my iPhone settings the RTM notifications are "ON"

symptoms:
(1) working: daily summary reminder works
(2) not working: reminder for due time
(3) not working: reminder for MSN + YAHOO

My iPhone is a german 3G 16GB

You are welcome, thanks for the information. I would try powering on and off your iPhone, logging out of the web interface and then see if your notifications work.

I switched off my iPhone many times during the last 2 weeks and logged off too many time from the web interface. Are the mentioned features maybe available only for pro users ??
Posted 15 years ago
andrewski (Remember The Milk) says:
mneumann, reminders are definitely not a Pro feature. The iPhone app is, but push notifications will work as long as the app does, i.e. you can certainly use them during a trial.

Since your IM reminders also aren't working, it sounds like you have them turned off or disabled somehow. Check your Settings on the website on the Reminders tab; look for "If the task has a due time, remind me..." and make sure one (or both) of the checkboxes under there is checked. Then also make sure your IM accounts and iPhone are turned on under "I want to be reminded by..." at the bottom.
