No badge updates via Push Notification (for now)

emily (Remember The Milk) says:
For those wondering why app badge updates via Push Notification weren't included in the latest release, we're still looking into this (it's actually pretty complex, as millions upon millions of tasks in our system need to be monitored all the time for any changes that might make an individual RTM user's badge number go up or down :)

If we're to provide this functionality, we need to ensure that we don't affect the performance of the rest of RTM for the sake of pushed badge numbers, so that's why it's not available right now (apologies to those keen on this feature!).

Hi Emily, let me put my vote in for NOT updating the badge if it means ANY loss of performance. I love how fast rtm syncs, scrolls, etc. What I was hoping to see was some other improvements such as hitting Search automatically pops up the keyboard and puts the cursor in the field. Small stuff. Thanks for such a great product!

Thanks for letting us know about this Emily. You've been much more open about this than I expected. Normally we'd be kept in the dark about missing/requested features. I'm not having a dig, just saying I appreciate the info.

And thanks again for the push alerts, it's great to see this so soon after the launch of OS3.0.

i look forward to the push badges. It would make the whole system that much more seemless

however it would be awesome! if we could have an alert with the message. I don;t look at my phone all the time, but if it made a sound, the reminder would be more useful

just my 2 cents

Great to hear your looking into it. My tasks generally don't require I be notified... but knowing how many outstanding is really what I need.

Sweet! As long as it's not a performance hit-I hope this is added. I use the iphone badges a lot!

Emily, thanks for being so proactive and honest regarding push.

I'd like to add one vote FOR pushed badge updates, mainly because even with pushed reminders (which really just replaced text reminders), I still need the badge number there. So, it's somewhat difficult to remember that I need to constantly open RTM so that I can update the badge count.

Thanks again for all your hard work, looking forward to seeing pushed badge numbers!

Thanks for the update. If you find you can add this please do.

It's great that we already have push notifications so soon, very encouraging!

However, I am another vote for badge updates, even if it means a slight loss in performance. Having the fastest service in the world is not that valuable if the badge count on the app I use to access the service is inaccurate most of the time.

Thanks for explaining. I can live without it, but it would be nice.

Prehaps there could be a way to only update the badge, say every 10-15 minutes or so?

This is really too bad, as it's the only push-notification that doesn't duplicate an already-present notification.

I realize this is personal preference, but keeping my badge up-to-date is the only notification I have any interest in.

Definitely a feature that would be very useful, but certainly not if it wrecks performance. Here's to hoping that you guys figure out a way to accomplish it without sacrificing performance!

I'm just throwing in another request for badge push. Things are great as is, but checking my number of outstanding tasks per day on the badge is a big part of my workflow.

Right now, I open the app, update the badge with a quick sync, and close it out. Being able to skip this step as I complete tasks between my PC and phone would be ideal.

Thanks for the hard work and the great system.

Thanks much for filling us in — I was hoping it was just an oversight, but alas you seem to have a better reason than that :-)

Very much looking forward to when the number in the little red circle will finally truly mean something :-D

Oh! An idea: It sounds like the tricky part would be getting RMilk to send the notification as soon as any task becomes due. What if the badge notifications just went out after midnight every day instead? So long as the user is concerned only with what's due *today,* which I imagine is usually the case, I should think that'd be quite sufficient.

Really looking forward to badge updates (and sound on the notifications). Keep up the great work!

I second jyrinx's idea. Daily reminders already go out to me everyday, but a little catchy badge number would be nice to see how many projects I can tick off in a day

I third jyrinx's idea... I have mine set on tasks due today already. It needs to include any overdue tasks as well.

I would love to see the badge reflect any list or smartlist the user designates.

(Similarly, I'd love to be able to designate a smartlist as one of the bottom buttons within the app.)

One more vote for badge updates being the feature I would most like to see, but as a developer I understand performance complexities. Good luck finding a solution. :)

Just wanted to note that this feature is now available in version 1.1.1. :)
