iPhone - obsolete tags don't go away from tag list

I have a bunch of obsolete tags that I have completely expunged from the RTM database (current and completed), yet they still show up in the list of tags on the iPhone app. How do I get them to go away?

Navigate to the Tags screen (by tapping its icon in the bottom bar, or its item underneath More).
Tap Edit to enter the editing mode.
Tap the right arrow to see the details for a tag.
Tap the Delete Tag button and then confirm the deletion.
Tap Done again to leave the editing mode.
Note: When a tag is removed, tasks with this tag will not be deleted.
