Pending shared list does not appear for other user

I selected three of my lists and shared them with another user. In each of the list's sharing tab, the user shows up labeled with "Pending".
When the other user goes to the Overview tab, in the "What's New" box sometimes they see [3] shared lists. Sometimes the box is empty, sometimes it has a 6 or a 9. But in all cases when they click on the "shared lists" link, none of the shared lists appear in the table of lists.
