is there a way to have it automatically unselect an item when i'm done changing due date?

currently when I select an item and then change the due date, the item stays selected. this is very annoying as it means i have to manually unselect each item before moving on to a different one! is there any way around this behavior?

Press "i".

You can then even move to the next item with j or k and then press i again to select and d to change the due date/time.

You are correct, it is manual. But it's so quick that you don't even notice it. Once you get the hang of the keyboard, it will be like second nature.
