how to catch tasks with due dates before their start dates?

I sometimes make a mistake of setting a task's due date earlier in time than the task's start date. The task doesn't show up in my smart lists till the due date, which can be very problematic.

Does anyone know how to find tasks with due dates that precede their start dates?

There's no built-in way to catch these tasks, though the task details will show a "hazard" symbol for these tasks as you set these dates.

If it helps at all, you could catch these tasks as they come up date-wise: searching for (dueBefore:today OR due:today) AND startAfter:today would show them as they become due.

You could add that search to a Smart List you already have or make a Smart List—if the Smart List is not empty, there's something to review and to correct.
