Missing Sync conduit

will.kessler says:
Anybody out there heard of or built a conduit for RTM? I'm wondering if I should invest the effort. I'd like to get RTM in and out of my Palm Tungsten E2 with Mark/Space's Missing Sync. They have a sample conduit codebase, and I'm thinking I could go back and forth with Palm's To-Do list and RTM.

Emily? Anyone?

Thanks in advance.

I cannot speak to the coding of this, or to the effort, but I hope that if you pursue this, you are able to create a conduit that works within Apple's entire iSync framework and doesn't rely only on Missing Sync. This would mean that those who don't use Missing Sync, but do use Palm Desktop, iCal, Entourage, etc. could make use of it, as well.

My TE2 and I hope you are able to pull this off. Please keep us updated of your progress, and let us know if you need help testing it out.

If you know of any resources about the iSync framework, esp. sample code that shows how the iSync w/palm actually works, that'd help me out. Thanks.

Sorry to say, Will, I know nothing about programming, so all I could suggest would be the same things you'd find in 5 minutes of googling. Good luck in your coding efforts.

Will, it may also be worth asking on the developer mailing list for the RTM API in case anyone there has experience with this.

It might be easier to go about it as a two step process. If you're looking to sync, I'm guessing you're ALREADY syncing with some other desktop software. Lets assume Outlook. If you can get your RTMs into Outlook, you can probably sync them through outlook's conduit.

RTM offers an iCal feed, which you can bring into outlook with a free addin called Remote Calendars. You can find it at http://sourceforge.net/projects/remotecalendars/ If you have some other desktop software, you'd just need to see if it supports iCal imports..

I've not tried this myself, but it should work in theory: You'd just install the addin and add a new remote calendar. Copy and paste the iCal link on the todo list you want. Then let outlook sync your new items RC will create :)

Cheek, Mark/Space's Missing Sync is a Mac product, so the clever RemoteCalendar backdoor you suggest is, alas, not of use.

I have thought about using RTM's iCal feature to get items in to Apple's iCal, and then iSync or MissingSync to get from the Mac to the Palm. Where this collapses is that additions and changes to the todo list on the Palm are not synced back to RTM, so it's a read-only kludge.

Perhaps use SunriseXP (http://sunrise.mobileread.com/) to sync the mobile pages (http://m.rememberthemilk.com/) to your pda. Use something like Plucker (http://www.plkr.org/) to read.

Of course this is read only, but I use DiddleBug to jot down quick to-do's, and then process them into rtm, a-la GTD.

DiddleBug is the reason I still carry my Palm around - it's great.

I'm thinking maybe the new hookup with Google Gears will make this simpler. If I can make missing sync send its data to my browser, i can maybe write a webapp to store that into the google Gears db so that RTM can read it out.

Emily, are you planning on documenting how RTM uses google gears so that this sort of hookup might be possible?

The nice thing about this approach is that it would work anywhere google gears works, mac/pc/linux.

Will, unfortunately I don't think this is possible without writing a specific sync conduit that talks to RTM through the API. The web-based syncing solution is pretty specific to the web client. We'll think about writing some sort of documentation for people who are interested in writing sync tools for RTM.

This is what I do, and it works pretty well. To add to-dos I either SMS them to my email address (which filters them to RTM) or I jot them down to add later when I'm at a computer.
