Reminders: RTM Vs. Google?

david.humble says:
I'm having trouble getting SMS reminders set up in the UK.

The only two UK service providers listed by RTM are Virgin and T-Mobile. Orange and Vodafone (the two biggest) are not supported.

I've tried (unsuccessfully) to contact orange about the email-to-SMS service that makes the reminders work, but they don't seem to know what I'm talking about.

Reminders from Google Calendar work fine on my Orange phone.

I can only assume that the technology, protocol, whatever, being used by Google is fundamentally different from that being used by RTM.

Am I right?

If I could understand what the difference is, I might be able to explain to Orange what I need.

As far as the people I spoke to at Orange are concerned, the service Google are providing me with, should be impossible. That gives you an idea of what I'm up against.

I know this isn't RTM's fault, it's our crappy service provoders, but I find it hard to believe that Orange and Vodafone don't offer what we need, I think I'm just not explaining it to them in a language they can understand.

David, I feel your frustration with contacting your mobile provider (I don't think that any that I've called have known what I'm talking about either :)

According to arollason in this topic, it sounds as though Orange are offering an email-to-SMS service -- however it only sends through the subject of the email, which makes it fairly useless for this purpose (we send the actual reminder in the body of the email, so that we can send a list of tasks that are due).

I'm guessing that Google is paying to send their SMS reminders directly through the networks (i.e. they pay for each reminder that they send). Unfortunately we can only support providers with free email-to-SMS services at this stage.
