The GPS option has more to do with affecting your battery than the frequency you use to check the locations. You may find that checking every 5 or 10 minutes works well enough without GPS.
Keep in mind that without GPS your location may not always be the most accurate, so you may want to make sure your location radius is wide enough. :)
