Valid characters for tag prefix and sort order

I am attempting to use RTM for GTD. I would like add a prefix to my tags with various characters, such as @ # &. However, I noticed that RTM does not accept # as a valid character for tags.
What are the valid characters for tags and what is the sort order of those characters? For instance, ! is ordered before +. + is ordered before @.

I prefix projects with a "-" and contexts with a "@" when tagging... this places projects before contexts.
I just tried different tags randomly, and found most special characters didn't work.
(I liked "-" for tasks because it is a single keystroke not requiring a shift key... and "@" because it's been so pounded into my brain. hehe)

Aside from letters, numbers, and international characters, the valid characters for tags are:
+ - . @ _
(I think they sort in that order.)
Hope this helps.
