Location range and GPS inaccuracy

ilyse.kazar says:
Just curious whether this is happening because I live in such a compact urban environment or whether the problem is universal.

I live a 90% walkable lifestyle. Therefore I've set my Location notification range to be very small, because when I'm sitting in my apartment I do not wish to be reminded that I need to get stamps at the post office (1/2 mile away) or to pick up a sack of flour at the market (approx. 1,000 feet away).

But even if I set my location prefs to get reminders "within 100 feet" the cowbell rings constantly. I would really LOVE to have this working so that when I'm within 100 feet (I'd actually prefer 250 or 500) of the location in question, I'm reminded to pop in for a purchase.

I know that GPS is not accurate. In fact, while writing this post I just found this article with maps showing how far off GPS can be when depending on reminder apps. http://mashable.com/2011/03/09/smartphone-gps-accuracy/

So then, as much as I would LOVE to be reminded when I'm within range (even double the range I set), I do not wish to get notifications when I am sitting at a spot 3 or 4 or 6 times the radius I've set.

Therefore I am curious whether anyone here finds that there is any difference between, or any real point to, having location notification radius settings as small as 100, 250 or even 500 ft?

And curious to hear from RTM staff whether they have found the fine-grained settings to work. I'm defining "work" as "do not trigger notifications unless I am really in range."

Hi ilyse.kazar,
These smaller radiuses should work, but as you mentioned, this can depend on how accurate your device's GPS is. In testing on my device, for example, if I add several very close locations, I can see a difference between a 250ft and 500ft radius in my Nearby list.

In combination with your other post, it sounds like there may be something else going on. Would you be able to contact us so we can take a closer look?

Thanks!
