Can't prevent startup in offline mode.

I installed RTM yesterday after hearing about it for years. It looks like fun.
I have no difficulty accessing it from FF, but Chrome is a different matter.
"Remember The Milk could not access the Internet, and has switched to offline mode. Some operations may not be available until online mode is restored."
Using Chrome directly, connection is "intermittent." It worked for a while, then failed and I could not get access. Then I found a post here that recommended using https://www.rememberthemilk.com/login/ to sign in again, and after that it seems that Chrome is happy. At least for the time being.
Using the desktop icon, I always get the above message.
Is there a log file or some way to get a clue about what is making the software unhappy? The pop-up message is not at all helpful. Can't reach the server? Can't log in? Login failed? Having a bad day?
At one point I clicked the setting to always use HTTPS, but that is now turned off. Is it possible that the desktop icon is confused by that?
The desktop target is presently:
"C:\Documents and Settings\(user)\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --app="http://www.rememberthemilk.com"
while I was troubleshooting I changed it from the original, which was something like:
"C:\Documents and Settings\(user)\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --app="http://www.rememberthemilk.com/offline" because that didn't look right.
TIA

Hi mitty,
It sounds like the desktop icon that you're using was created by Google Gears and is attempting to open the site in offline mode. You should be able to avoid this error by going to http://www.rememberthemilk.com/ directly.
If you'd like to create a new desktop icon, you can do so in Chrome by clicking on the wrench icon, then on Tools, then Create Application Shortcuts.
Hope that helps!

No joy there, unfortunately. The "Create Application Shortcut" was grayed out when I opened Chrome, so I went to http://www.rememberthemilk.com/ and was redirected to http://www.rememberthemilk.com/home/mitty/
The result of that was:
"Remember The Milk could not access the Internet, and has switched to offline mode. Some operations may not be available until online mode is restored"
But there is no problem with Chrome accessing other internet sites. Is there no diagnostic log?

Hi mitty,
Sorry to hear that didn't help. Would you be able to contact us so we can get some additional details on your situation?
Thanks!
