Time for real backup

RTM is doing a super job with the iPad, iPhone, etc versions which I bet is increasing user base (like me) but adds complex multi-device syncs The next priority should be more robust user-controlled export/import solution (XML?) so that recovery from messed up syncs or from user error can be done by reverting to previous snapshots. The iCal approach seems really inadequate, though if someone else differs I'd love to hear.
Hi robert.kahn,
Thanks for your feedback on this!
If you haven't done so already, you may also want to vote in our Ideas forum for any backup/export formats you'd like to see supported. For example, this thread suggests XML backup.
Thanks!

I'm sorry I am suspecting a smokescreen, or I am too thick. I subscribe using Apple iCal but no tasks appear. This doesn't work -- if it did why isn't there a really clear step-by-step guide? What am I (and others) missing?? As far as I can tell there is NO way to backup my data :-(
You can find instructions for backing up your data here. This process will use the iCalendar feed to create a file containing all your tasks.
Once you have the iCalendar file, you can import it into iCal to see the snapshot of your tasks at the time you made the backup.
If you're having trouble importing the file, would you be able to contact us so we can take a look? We'd be happy to help verify the contents of your backup files.
Hope that helps!

OK, I got it to work. This is pretty minimal. I hope it's on the road map.
If you haven't already, you may want to share your ideas and vote in our Ideas forum as well. Please let us know any thoughts you have on this.

The iCal documentation says "Only tasks with due dates will be shown as events."
Does this mean that tasks without a due date aren't backed up? MOST of my tasks won't have a due date, as I use due dates only for promises I've made or external constraints (bills paid on time or tax return filed on time, etc)
Need a real backup, to XML, MySQL, JSON. And clear process for restoring into RTM (so if I created a new account and read in the backup, the two accounts would be identical)

Hi glerner,
The iCalendar (Events) feed, which is used to display your tasks as events in a calendar application, will only include tasks with due dates and incomplete tasks.
On the other hand, the standard iCalendar feed will include all tasks, including tasks with no due dates and completed tasks. In the backup instructions, we recommend using the standard iCalendar feed for this reason. Hope that helps!
Thanks for your feedback on the backup/restore process as well.
