Understanding repeating tasks

triplec11 says:
I had a question regarding repeating tasks. When I scheduled a task that repeat "every month" and that task became overdue by one day, the only task that appeared in my list was the task that was overdue. Upon completing that task, the following month's task appeared. However, when I set a different task to repeat on a weekly basis and that task became due, there were two tasks that appeared on my task list...the task that was due that day AND the task that was due the following week. Why is there a difference as to when the following task appears? Is there a certain rule for when a repeating task appears that I am not aware of? Thanks!

I guess that your first task was set to repeat after 1 month while the second was set to repeat every month.
In any case, the two repeat formats behave just like you describe.

As rajjan mentioned, there are 2 kinds of repeating tasks: "every..." and "after...". Tasks repeated using "after..." will generate a new occurrence of the task only after you've completed the previous occurrence (the overdue task in your example).

This page includes more details on the difference between the 2 types.

Hope that helps!

Hey guys, I appreciate your response, but unfortunately I do not believe that is the case. I am familiar with the difference between "every..." and "after..." tasks and all of the tasks I mentioned in my question are set to "every..." Is there any difference between "every..." tasks that are set to weekly compared to monthly? Thanks!

triplec11,
If you're seeing different behavior between tasks that repeat weekly and tasks that repeat monthly, would it be possible to submit a Tasks & Lists issue report via our support system? We'd love to get some additional details on these tasks.

Thanks!

Hi Guys:
I am adding a task and setting it to repeat everyday but I can't see it in my daily tasks for today. Is it also required to put a due date for this task?

avsethu2011,
If you create a task that repeats daily but has no due date, the first occurrence of the series will be the only task without a due date. Once you complete the first occurrence, the next occurrence will be due tomorrow based on the "every 1 day" repeat property.

Whether a task with no due date will display in your tasks for today will depend on where you are viewing your tasks. Future occurrences of the task, however, will have a due date and should appear in your list.

Hope that helps!

senthil.manciakm,
It's not currently possible the create a task that repeats more than once per day. Sorry for any inconvenience.

If you need to receive a reminder at certain times of the day, you can create multiple tasks that are due at different times and repeat every 1 day.

Hope that helps!

I would like to keep track of my weekday morning showers. I shower on weekday mornings from 8:15 am to 8:30 am, but some days I forget. I would like to check complete the showers I have actually taken, and leave uncompleted the showers that I have missed.

Is there a way to do this with repeating tasks?

Hi heywood.poole,
The "every weekday" repeat interval may be helpful in this situation. This will create a new occurrence of the task whether you complete it or not, so it would allow you to leave the task incomplete on the days you didn't do it. Try creating the task like this:

shower ^today at 8:15am *every weekday

Hope that helps!
