Irregular recurring tasks

nicb says:
I love RTM and use it extensively, but there is one list organisation problem that I haven't been able to solve:

I have a 'departure checklist' list - things that need doing before I leave. They are the same things each time I leave, but the next time I leave may be a week distant, a month or two in the future.

If I set them to be recurring after a week, then as soon as I check them complete they reappear (but with a different date), it makes checking that all things on the list are complete a bit difficult, I have to look at the dates and think too much.

I have tried a secondary filtered list so that I only show those that are current, but I havent been successful with this either - I have to reset the filter criteria each time I use the list...

Any suggestions as to how I can have a list, and not have any of the items recur until every item in the list is complete?

Thanks in advance.

Another way to accomplish this would be sending an e-mail with all the preparations listed in order, with due dates corresponding to the departure. Using Smart Add syntax, the tasks could be tagged, with due dates and durations etc. Remember to use the correct e-mail address (Import list?).

If you use MS Excel too, you could create tasks that are really formulaes with an offset to the departure date ("checkin one day before departure") and copy all the tasks to an e-mail and send that to your Inbox in RTM.

You could create a template departure list (and archive it) of your departure tasks, then when you know your departure date copy the tasks to your working lists and add a due date.

Building on rajjan’s suggestions, some people use Gmail's templates for this task, too. I have a business and a personal packing list that I keep there, for example.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I think the one that works best for me is an imported list. The bit that I didn't highlight in my original is that I use the iPhone app to check off items on this particular list, so the unarchiving lists isn't an easy option.

The other challenge that this method imposes is maintianing the list. It doesnt change often, but things do change.

So, to keep it all on the iPhone I have created a Simplenote note which is the list of tasks. I can edit the things there, then when needed I can email the list out of Simplenote for it to be imported in to RTM. Not a bad workflow

Next, I need TripIt to send the mail to RTM when I have a particular itinerary. That would be automation heaven. But I can't find that functionality in TripIt... Yet...

Thanks again for the suggestions.
