Notes disappear from "repeat after" tasks.

(closed account) says:
I just filed a report for this as well, but thought I would let others know what I am experiencing to see if anyone else is having this problem, or if anyone has some work arounds.

I really like the "repeat after" feature, and use it a lot more than "repeat every". However, any time that I mark a task which is set for "repeat after" as completed, any notes in that task disappear on the new occurrence of the task.

If I use "repeat every" functions, then the notes stay intact on the next occurrence of that task when marking it complete.

I had experienced the problem of my notes disappear from repeating tasks before, but only now have figured out exactly under what conditions it occurs, and that appears to be only when using a repeat syntax like "after 3 months".

Hi coopbmt,
This happens because tasks that repeat "every…" and "after…" act a bit different with regards to notes.

The "every" repeating option creates a task series (notes and all other task properties are common across all instances of the task).

The "after" repeating option works a little differently: it doesn't create a task series, but rather creates a new independent task each time (copying its properties like priority from the old task, but not duplicating any existing notes). Each 'after' task has its own properties and notes, and isn't tied to other tasks.

Hope this helps!

I just noticed this as well. Andrew, are you saying this behavior is intentional? I have a task that I need to do a month after I complete it. With that task I have instructions reminding myself of the steps. Is there no way to get those notes to carry forward to the generated task using "repeat after"?

Thanks!

Hi Jim,
Yes, this is currently how "after" tasks work, but thanks for the feedback on how you'd like it work!

I agree that I this is not what I'd expect. I would like my notes to be carried forward when using "repeat after" as well.

The fact that this is not the way it works will be a big hindrance to how I envisioned setting up my system.

I'll put my vote in for at least an option to have notes stick to tasks repeating after, I would find that to be enormously helpful.

I just had to add:

As far as i am concerned this is a bug since i don't remember other task managers i used deleting the notes of self-regenerating tasks.

+1, I consider this a bug as well, there's no logical reason the two types should act differently.

I'm actually going to add it to my nightly automation script, which already does several things for me I wish RTM did automatically, so one more won't hurt :)

I too would like notes to stick (or an option). I find using "after" a much cleaner way to keep things in order for tasks that aren't time dependent, but you do often.

I think it should be optional, because sometimes it's better, if the notes doesn't stick.

If most people are like me, they would assume both repeating "every" and "after" to repeat in the same way. It is anti-intuitive for "after" to behave differently. I lost a lot of notes before I realized that "after" doesn't save notes like "every" does.

Is there a way to search out the dropped notes in earlier instances of the task?

brendan says:
aajax2,
The note that you added is still attached to the original instance of the task. If you completed that original task, you can find the note with the following search:
status:completed AND noteContains:"some note text"

Hope that helps!

I went through this same situation with Andrew years ago. Curious to see that it remains an issue today. RTM - I think this is saying something!

I still have trouble remembering the differences between "every" and "after'....I agree - let's either have both remember the notes or have an option in settings.

Ah! I always thought it was a bug..

So +1 for the suggestion to copy the notes of repeating tasks to the new one.

I have a Recipe list so I use the notes to store the recipe and repeat on a regular basis depending on how popular it is with the family, the occasion etc. Bit disconcerting when the recipe disappears especially when you want to look up the ingredients in the supermarket.

I was sure that I had written a note on the details of my task, only to find that the note was not copied to the newly generated task. Ended up here in this forum.

Notes go away, but URLs stick around. When I need this functionality on a "repeat after" task, I create a Google Doc and paste the URL of the doc in to the task. Clunky, but it works. Hope this turns out to be helpful to you!

I'll +1 that this is a bug and hope that the functionality of "repeat after" is adjusted. Thanks!
