RTM Use Patterns for Subtasks

Im new to RTM and am still trying to evaluate whether or not it meets my requirements. I'd happily become a pro user if it meets my requirements.
I have 10 or so changing work projects I want to manage via RTM. I need to organize work by week and month across all these projects (eg, see all my tasks across all projects by month or week). Several of the projects have large subtasks that I also want to break down (eg, write a report for project X and then break that down into write the intro, write the methods, ask joe to send the result graphs, etc.)
I read the "Advanced GTD" post and set up a structure similar; I have a single Inbox list and then use tags to define tasks for projects (wk.project1, wk.project2, etc.). Using tagContains "wk." and due dates, I can get weekly and monthly lists. (However, the resulting lists are not ordered by project which means Im going to have to write some custom code to do this?)
This approach seems mostly workable until I need to define large tasks within a project. Recursively creating even more smart lists -- like wk.project1.report1 -- is feasible but awkward and unwieldy.
Im assuming that, given its popularity, RTM users must have worked out how to do this; it seems a pretty basic task management requirement. I understand RTM doesnt have subtask support built in, but how do people actually do it? Or, given my requirements, is RTM not a good option for me?
Thanks.

You may be interested in perusing the forums to see how other users have grouped their tasks; while subtasks aren't currently available, it's certainly something users have figured out some pretty effective ways of doing.
Hope this helps!
