Shared lists don't automatically share new items

I think I might be missing something stupid, but when I share a list with a contact and then add new items to that list, they don't get shared with the contact, and when they add items to it, they don't get automatically shared with me.
Do I have to just manually share everything I add to the list? If so what's the point of sharing a whole list?
