Using RTM to bill clients
juliaflint says:
Admittedly, I am just sinking my teeth into RTM (I've been using another task program for YEARS, but it is only Windows-based, and I need portability).
My biggest question is: can I use RTM to bill my clients? My other program has an "invoicing" ability, where I can search for the client/project name ("tag"), put in a set of dates ("completedWithin:"1 month of today", I assume -- but does that mean I can only search for a month's worth on exactly the last day of the month?), and find the tasks completed during the last month, with a total of time spent. I can then bill my client and include the report as a back-up.
I've been playing around with tags, searches, and smart lists, but I haven't come up with a way yet -- figured I'd pop into the help area before I got myself too befuddled.
Is it possible to do what I need?
LMK if you need more info --
Thanks in advance!
Julia

Hi Julia,
It sounds like you have all the pieces you need (completedWithin:"1 month of today" works on a rolling month). As far as reporting, probably your best bet would be to print the list of tasks as you see them or copy/paste into a word processor if you need to change the formatting.
Is there anything else you need? Just post back here if so!

The only problem with the rolling month idea is that it means I have to generate the invoice exactly on the last day of the month. Not always a possibility.
Also, does that count number of days as 30, or does it know that May has 31 days?
After spending some time with RTM, I'm not totally convinced it will answer all my needs, but I'd really like it to, since it is the cleanest interface I've seen.
I wonder if any users have this invoice process working as a real-life application.

Ah, if you want to search for completed tasks based on a fixed date, you can search for completedAfter:1st (or whichever day of the month works for you).
You may find some of the past forum discussions on invoicing to be helpful. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks for the tip on that filter.
I did a search for "invoicing" and "invoice" in the forums and came up with nothing (only one unresolved question) -- that's why I posted. Maybe I'm looking with the wrong search term?

People use monthly searches for all sorts of purposes; one that comes to mind that may help direct your searches is "monthly reports".
