More Priority Levels

(closed account) says:
Hi all,

I need more priority levels for various tasks. Sometimes, I defined 2 tasks with level 3 but one is less important then another one but there is no pr. 4. I think it would be cool if the priority scale grows. maybe 1-5 or even 1-10...

I agree, and it's probably not a very hard thing to implement.

My standard disclaimer: this suggestion is simply a workaround, not me saying I disagree with any given feature idea or suggestion.

You can approximate priorities with tags, such as 2hi, 2reg, and 2lo, for purposes of classification and sifting. I have a few tags I use to indicate, for example, both important AND urgent.

What my suggestion then begs, and I have been asking for for some time, is the ability to sort lists and smartlists by various criteria, such as tags. Arbitrary sorting would add all sorts of power to many of the workarounds suggested here on the boards.

Absolutely. Related to this, and suggested in other topic, being able to display any property of the tasks in the list view, instead of only due date, would also empower many hacks & tricks.

Thanks for replies.

Thanks also for the idea ranbarton but seeing the tasks with a priority color next to it is very different than listing/seperating them with tags. I frequently use tags but for prioritizing, I think, we need a core implementation.

True. A richer use of color cues, both for differentiating among lists and tasks, has been suggested often, and I think it would be great. I'm sure Emily is concerned about the aesthetics of it, as RTM is so attractive currently, but I suspect it could be done.

My personal color desire would be to have the smartlist tabs each have a color that reflected the number of undone tasks within them. E.g., if my bills due tab was white, I wouldn't need to look at it, but if it were red, I'd have a problem. That sort of 'at a glance' overview would be great.

Yes, priorities are pretty limited the way they are. While using tags for priorities will work, it is yet another one of these workarounds that mean lots of additional work for the user in implementing. What would be nice besides color coding is the ability to actually NAME priorities. This way, you could have your own set of "urgent" "important" "Get to it eventually, etc." but you could even use priorites for things like "wating on" so that when you sorted by priority, these things would be at the bottom (as long as in addition to a name, each priority also had a "sequence number" so that the sorting would be based on that...

Try using prefixs for the names of the tasks. I use + for all the high priority tasks, and there are other options, particularly with the symbols on the number row for doing this.

Indeed, more levels of priority would be nice.. and simple to implement.. but even NICER would be if you could have an option in your settings where you could choose from a list the number of priorities that you want.

Thanks for the "+" idea deterb.

I use no due date to signal a someday/maybe or "get to it eventually" task. Seems to be working well for me.

I also would like completion priority numbering of tasks (beyond 1,2,3 which are more general categories and not day specific ordering of tasks to be done) so that you could set a desired order of completion - something I think I can only do now by modifying the task name with a precursor such as 1,2,3, etc...

I could then call up today's smart todo list and assign completion priority numbers to my intended tasks for the day.

Again, we see an example of how customizable, per-list, multi-variate sorting would be so useful.

This idea is considered similar to "Add more priority levels", and all votes have been transferred to that idea.
