Google's trustworthiness googles me.

Maybe somebody knows any alternative, or maybe you can state some convincing words to help me, to one side or the other.

You only need to install Gears if you want your RTM data to be available to you when you are in offline mode. If you don't plan to use that mode, you do not need to install Gears to have RTM functionality.
