Documentation for shorthand task entry

I see occasional references to the ability to entering tasks with time, priority , tags, etc. from the task entry box using special characters like '*' and '#'. I can't find any help page that shows you how to do this and what all the special characters are. Where are the instructions for such shorthand codes?
