Sync problems on iPhone

swa says:
In the last couple of weeks, I observe the following:

- I change something on the IPhone, sync process starts. Both the network traffic icon and RTM icon spin, network traffic icon stops, RTM icon keeps spinning indefinitely. I quit the app after a (long) while.
- I re-start RTM.
- RTM either takes a loooong time to start or quits back to the home screen (I then restart and RTM opens)
- In either case, any changes are lost.

It appears that the sync process is not as reliable as it used to be...

Stefan,

Have you restarted the phone since this began happening? I find that when I add/delete apps from my iTouch that I often need to restart it to have all my apps function properly.

Could you remove and reinstall the app to see if that corrects this?

I'll remove and re-install RTM and re-boot the beast. I'll come back in a week to see if it solved the problem. -Stefan

Ok, a couple of weeks have passed. During the first days, the problem did not appear again (both icons stop spinning at the same point) and I was again a happy RTM user.

Now, we're back to normal (see top post) :-(

swa,
Have you tried both on the mobile network (your mobile provider, e.g. AT&T) and over Wi-Fi? This kind of behavior can happen if the network is particularly slow or has trouble connecting to the website.

Also, would it be possible to run a bandwidth test on your iPhone to see what kind of speeds you're getting? ("Speed Test" is one.)

Hi,

I think that it happens on both WiFi and 3G/EDGE (the provider is T-Mobile). I'll follow up with a speed test. This problem is really getting annoying. I wonder whether its really the network connection? After all, it's the RTM icon that is spinning, not the network icon. That always stops way before the RTM icon stops (if it stops at all). If I quit RTM and go back in, RTM will stall then exit.

The interaction between the network spinner and the RTM one doesn't really mean much; it's up to the app to ask the network one to spin.

It sounds like your iPhone is jailbroken? If so, and if you're using any software that might affect your connection (e.g., tethering apps, proxies), we'd recommend disabling such software so that you're only using the iPhone's standard connections.

Unfortunately it's difficult to track down problems that might occur with connections on jailbroken phones: our app uses the standard connection methods provided by the iPhone, so we don't have any control over any connection problems that may occur when a phone is jailbroken.
