Not receiving SMS on either AT&T or Sprint

I have my reminders setup to receive an SMS if the task has a due time. I was on AT&T and couldn't get it to work, now I'm on Sprint and it's still a no-go. What is the format I should pick:

555-555-1212 or
1-555-555-1212 or
+1-555-555-1212?

I firgured since it knows I'm in the US I shouldn't need the 1 or +1. Thanks.
