entering dates as part of the task name

langejos says:
I am really excited about the new Smart Add feature but ran into a small issue with the first task I created: I have a 'waiting for' list on which the task names are structured as
[] -
e.g.
09/08 Bill - talk to new vendor
Smart Add now interprets the date at the start as the due date for the task, which makes it show up as 'today' and drops the date from the task name.
How can I force this date not to be interpreted by Smart Add but simply seen as part of the task name?

From the FAQ: "If your task name includes a date or time word, you can put the phrase that you don't want Smart Add to understand in quotes."

So your task would be 09/08 Bill - talk to new vendor.

Hope this helps!

You could attach a character next to the date so that it does not match a data pattern that causes RTL to interpret is as a date. If you don't care to add to the date field, you could enter something like

09/08--Bill: Talk to new vendor.

Notice there is no space between the date and the dashes. If you want to add to the date field as well, you might have to do something like

09/08--Bill: Talk to new vendor. ^09/08

Whoops; I just realized I messed up my post above.

langejos, your task would be "09/08 Bill - talk to new vendor".

Maybe I'm doing something wrong. When I use quotes like that, the quotes are entered in the name of the task. I really don't want them showing up, since it just clutters things. Does RTM not strip out the quotes (after Smart Add has ignored the phrase)?

Correct, it doesn't strip out the quotes. If you don't want them there, you'll have to go back and edit the name.
