Smartlists/Tabs for Published Lists?

Is this possible? Any other ideas?

This is definitely possible; I have a setup almost exactly as you describe with my wife (where I tell her to put anything she wants me to do, at any time :).
The only thing that I think may be missing is the idea of publishing the lists to him, reason being that RTM sees publishing as a way of showing a read-only view separate from the viewer's account. What it sounds like you want to do is to share these lists with him. (Steps in our Help pages.)
Once you share those lists, he'll automatically see anything new added to them, and be able to add anything to them also (which you'll then see), so it's a really nice setup for tasks either/both of you can do. :)
