problems using import & inbox email

I think I've followed the instructions for import email correctly, but the task (for inbox email) and tasks (for import email) are not showing up. Just as a test, I sent an email with the subject "test task" and no body to my my inbox email address. It's been about 5 minutes and nothing is showing up as "test task" either by looking in my inbox or searching for "test". Any ideas what I might have done wrong?
