Blue squares, not sorting in order, all tasks postponed

Last night I noticed that all of my tasks had been postponed by two days--no idea how that happened. I also noticed that the left column for all of my tasks is now blue. What does that mean?
Today I added a new task. Even though it's due today, it appears at the bottom of my list. Also, the left column for that task is white, not blue.
Any idea how I can prevent tasks from becoming postponed and how I can get my tasks to sort chronologically? And what does the blue mean?

The blue colour indicates priority (see the key here), so it sounds as though the priority of these tasks has been modified.
