offline only works when... online

Manually switching to offline works OK when the computer is online, but I cannot get to work
- an automatic switch to offline (unplugging the network cable, for example)
- starting in offline mode using www.rtm.com/offline (it will keep on saying "It looks like you're not logged in to Remember The Milk. To continue, please login then try again.")
Any idea what I could do or check?
