Possible to remove a specific tag from many tasks?

alasnik says:
I'm using abbreviated month tags (aug, sep, oct, etc.) to add to tasks in lieu of a due date, indicating that I should tackle the task sometime in a given month.

For tasks that aren't finished in that month, I need to find a way to bump them forward... e.g., changing all instances of "aug" tags to "sep."

I know it's possible to *add* a tag to a group of tasks, but I haven't discovered a way to *delete* a tag.

Suggestions? All I see is this thread from two years ago...

https://www.rememberthemilk.com/forums/help/6459/

...which says it's not really possible, and the kludge is to delete (and, I guess, in my case then immediately re-create) the tag you want to change from.

Thanks!

Adam

No help but I think you are correct that deleting and then immediately create the task is the only way.
Or you could look into the Sleeper tag method that effectively lets you create a start date for your tasks.

Hi Adam,
As described in the thread you posted, you can delete and rename tags using the Tags tab of the Settings screen. You can also merge tags here. For example, you could merge the "aug" and "sep" tags into a tag called "sep" to combine them.

Please note that operations performed on this screen modify all occurrences of the tag, including completed tasks. So you wouldn't be able to go back and see which completed tasks were tagged with "aug".

It may be best to try searching for all tasks tagged with "aug". Try searching for the following:

tag:aug

You can then select all the tasks in search results and change the tag from "aug" to "sep", just as you would do for a single task.

Hope that helps!

Hi Brendan, thanks much for the reply!

I'm a bit confused about your last suggestion, though. I did the search you recommended and indeed found all tasks that are tagged with "aug." However, when I select all of them, I don't see a way to change just that tag to "sep." Since nearly all of them have other tags, too (like "musicmaking" or "fitness"), it looks like I'd EITHER lose all these additional tags OR would end up with all the items tagged with both "aug" *and* "sep."

Could you clarify, please? Thanks!

Hmm. Interesting, but probably overkill for my suggestion, since I'm wanting to transition *all* "aug" tags to "sep" (and so on each month) :-).

But the "delete the tag" idea is so far sounding like the only solution, eh?

So in my case, I'd do the following:
1) Do a search: "tag:aug". Select all.
2) Add tag "sep"
3) Go into settings. Delete tag "aug." Then recreate it.

Okay, gonna give this a shot now... wish me luck!
(and sadly, it does seem like a pain to do each month, but on the bright side, maybe it'll get me to be better about completing tasks :p)

Okay, from experimentation, I may have found a faster way:
1) Go into settings.
2) Merge Aug+Sep --> Sep.

Now there'll be no Aug tag. But that's okay. Next year when I'm procrastinating again / get close to August, when I create a new task with #aug in it, voila, the tag'll get created then. No need to recreate now.

alasnik,

My apologies, I misunderstood. Unfortunately it's not possible to directly change just the "aug" tag if the tasks have a variety of other tags as well. As you mentioned, you can add the "sep" tag to all the tasks, or you can replace all the tags with "sep".

Hopefully the link that rajjan suggested will work for your situation.

Sorry for the confusion.
