Is this possible?

colin.radway says:
Hi

I have recently migrated a clients site from a MS exchange setup to a hosted google apps setup.

This all went fine until I was configuring the last PC and the user suddenly said to me

"what about the tasks?"

this was the first I heard of it, previously the client had only mentioned the contacts and calenders, which migrated perfectly.

so.. I now have a situation where I need to sync MS outlook tasks between 4 PCs.

Is this something this service can offer? and would I need a pro account for each machine or just for the main one?

please advise as I am trying to find a solution to this issue and keep hitting brick walls!

thanks!

Hi colin.radway,
MilkSync for Outlook allows you sync tasks between Outlook and Remember the Milk. You can install it on multiple machines, but it's important to note that it will sync with the instance of Outlook on that PC, and not directly with the Exchange server.

A Pro upgrade applies to a user's account. If all 4 installations of MilkSync for Outlook are being used with the same user account, you would only need 1 Pro upgrade.

Hope that helps!

hey brenden

thanks for coming back to me :)

we have actually bypassed the ex server on site now and its not being used, so we have no issues with the sync to ex server as its not being used any more!

so.. just to confirm.. I can have 1 pro account on one of the PCs there.. lets call it PC1

so PC1 has a list of tasks in outlook, using a Pro account

I can then set up free accounts on the other 3 machines and using the RTM service these PCs will pick up the list of tasks from PC1 and keep up to date?

Is this a 2 (or more to the point 4) way sync? if someone changes a task on pc3 will pcs1, 2 and 4 be updated?

thanks!

A Pro upgrade applies to a single user account. You can install MilkSync for Outlook on multiple machines, but you will need to use the same username on all the machines in order to keep them in sync. The upgrade is connected to the account, and not to any individual machine.

As long as all 4 installations of MilkSync are using the same user account, changes made in Outlook will sync to the other installations. For example, if a user makes a change on PC1, this change will be transferred to our servers when a sync is performed. This change will then be transferred from our servers to PC2, PC3 and PC4 when each of those machines performs a sync.

Hope that helps!

I understand

I am looking for a service that will enable each of the 4 workstations to make a change to the tasks list in outlook and that change to be synced to all of the other workstations.

If you confirm this functionality then I think I will move forward and sign up!

thanks

Yes, with MilkSync installed on all 4 machines, a change made to a task in Outlook on any of the computers will be synced to the other 3 computers as well.

MilkSync for Outlook also offers a free 15-day trial. If you'd prefer to try it out before upgrading, you can download the software it here to start your trial.

Hope this helps!

OK last question!

the 4 PCs that i need to sync.. they may have individual tasks list at present.

so.. is it possible to sync each PCs task list to the RTM account and then for the RTM account to sync back to each PC in order for the tasks to match up initially?

thanks.

brendan says:
After installing MilkSync for Outlook, the initial sync will transfer all tasks from Outlook on that PC to Remember the Milk, and all tasks Remember the Milk to Outlook. Therefore, after installing MilkSync on all 4 machines and syncing, they will all contain the same tasks.

As mentioned in the installation instructions for MilkSync, be sure you make a backup copy of your data before proceeding.

Hope that helps!

hi

this is colin using my clients account

we have just signed up as a pro account and tried to sync the data from outlook (an old MS exchange profile) to milksync

it looks like data has made it to the RTM account, but all tasks are blank?

any ideas?

Hi marshallsproperty,
Would you be able to contact us via email so we can get some additional details on this?

Thanks!

marshallsproperty says:
its ok i think we are going to manually rebuild the tasks list as its only 40 or so tasks on the new non-exchange profile and then set up the sync

i will come back if we get any more issues!

thanks :)

hi

wonder if you could help.

its installed and seems to be working apart from one issue

the client has the tasks list in outlook set up with columns.

one of the columns is not syncing, others are but this one is not

its called "start date" and contains numerical information

any ideas why this one is not syncing?

brendan says:
Although Outlook supports a "Start Date" property for tasks, this property is not available in Remember the Milk, so it will not be synced. The Due Date field, which is available on both platforms, will be synced.

If you're still having trouble syncing, would you be able to contact us by email? We'd love to take a closer look at what might be going on.

Thanks!

thanks..

so if the client used "due date" instead of "start date" then this would sync?

thanks

Also.. any other non syncing items I should be aware of?

thanks

brendan says:
Hi Dave,
Yes the Due Date property will sync.

The MilkSync for Outlook FAQ includes a list of which properties will sync and which ones will not. It also includes some important notes about certain properties. The relevant sections are "Which task properties will be synchronized when using MilkSync?" and "Which task properties will NOT be synchronized when using MilkSync?"

Hope that helps!
