desensitized to alerts

Anyone have any tips for not becoming too desensitized to the alerts that you get?
I am forgetful, so I get reminded of tasks all day (take medicine, take vitamin, move car, etc).
But sometimes I have something really important to do (like "go to the doctors"), and it will get mixed in with the rest of the alerts.
My reaction can sometimes be, "oh that's just my vitamin alert... I'll get to it in a bit."
And then all my tasks pile up and become overdue, including the doctor's appointment! LOL
Am I just being lazy, or is there a better way to approach alerts?

I think what would really help are variable reminders, so that (for example priority three repeating events tagged work emailed you at work, and priority 1 non-repeating events send you an SMS would go a long way to helping with alert desensitization. While this idea has been proposed for years on these fora, it is not yet available in RTM, so I have no real suggestion for you about how to proceed, I am sorry to say.
