getting started with RTM, feeling overwhelmed
robot_on_horse says:
i've been reading through the forums for the past few days, taking some notes, trying to get a handle on RTM and how to use it.
i'm familiar with GTD and i've had an RTM account for a couple years, but i've never really been able to make it work for me.
i think i just need help on how people got started. i've seen some of the "get started" topics on here (one with the ps- and wk- lists), but something is just not clicking for me.
when you started RTM, did you email yourself a brain dump and go from there? how did you decide how to set it up?
i'm more interested in how you got to where you are rather than in your actual set up. i just don't know where to start. i have analysis paralysis.
did you start out making some paper or whiteboard notes and sort of brainstorming or what?
i just have this list of things in my inbox right now and i've got a few tagged and i'm just feeling stuck.
i'm afraid of trying to too granular and ending up with a gazillion lists or not having enough detail and never getting anything done.
i just got laid off last month and i'm going back to school in january so i figure this would be a good time to spend a few days where i have nothing else to do getting RTM setup in a way that is useful to me.
help?

robot_on_horse,
You may have seen this post on using RTM for GTD, but I understand that a setup isn't exactly what you're looking for.
Personally, my own setup is a bit more stripped down; I find that a simpler set of lists keeps things from getting too segmented.
Ultimately, I have just added tasks when I think of them, with the occasional time to sit down and add/process a bunch at once.
Hope this helps you feel more comfortable!
